Dave Howe and Ina Timmer met in Grade 3 in Saanichton, British Columbia, Canada. Dave’s family immigrated from Blackpool, England and Ina’s came from Holland. The families settled across the street from each other in the beautiful Mt Newton Valley. Dave and Ina attended the same schools, from grade school through senior secondary. Not only were they neighbours, but they grew very fond of each other. Dave’s belief was always that he would attend university and come back to marry his childhood sweetheart.
Things didn’t turn out exactly the way he planned, as is often the case with life, and Dave’s ambitions and curiosity led him to the US, where he spent the majority of his business years. He married and raised a family, far away from the valley and his childhood romance.
Ina stayed in BC and raised her own family. Neither one thought their paths would cross again in any significant way, although for both, there were many memories.
Twenty-seven years later, they reunited, to find that the bond that had held them so close in childhood was still strong. Having raised their families, had successful careers and now, looking for a common purpose, they decided to see if one couple really can make a difference in the world.
It was 1998, and the beginning of Greenangels. Dave and Ina were living in Todos Santos,Baja, Mexico at the time. Through Greenangels they began helping out local projects and organizations, but soon realized that there were many needs, everywhere.
Greenangels took a different approach and began working on ‘sustainable philanthropy’. Their slogan became ‘making a difference, while making a dollar’, with the idea of working towards sustainable solutions to today’s issues.
They agreed that education was the key to changing the world, and approached educational institutions. This led them to Royal Roads University, where they were asked to work with the Eric C.Douglass Entrepreneurial Centre. They began mentoring to the BCom learners, focusing on the triple bottom line: a balance of economic, social and environmental solutions.
At present, Dave and Ina continue on this course. They continue mentoring students while also consulting to resort real estate projects, working with developers who appreciate that it is possible to ‘make a difference while making a dollar’.
They also write, and you can read Dave’s Thoughts every week, and catch Ina’s poetry.
Dave also has a very active woodchopping service….take a look at Chopping for Community
They live on beautiful Pender Island, which is part of the Gulf Islands, off the coast of British Columbia.
